DEAR NICKY LETTERS

1920, Cast bronze, Satirical medal, 59.7mm, 64.90g.


Obverse:  Wilhelm II writing one of his famous "Dear Nicky" letters to Czar Nicholas II between February 7 and September 26, 1895. Dr. Eisenbarth, a medical quack in German literature, looks over Wilhelm's shoulder to diagnose this foolishness.

 

Reverse:  Dr. Eisenbarth, as allegory for Royal medical quackery, reports his findings to Bismarck, "Nicht geisteskrank aber Berliner" (He is not mad, but a Berliner).

Goetz castigates the clumsy position Kaiser Wilhelm took in 1895 where he favored the Russian desire directed towards China so offensively in the Chinese-Japanese conflict that Japan still remembered his faux-pas in 1914.
