The surrender of King Leopold of Belgium left the English armies in a desperate situation. A skillful executed retreat enabled them to reach Dunkirk, where during the period from May 27 to June 3, 1940 hundreds of private craft and small sea vessels were able to evacuate 225,000 English and 111,000 French troops to England. All the equipment was lost however.
