STALINGRAD AND THE PLANES OF THE TYPE JU-52

 

1943, Cast Bronze Commemorative Medallion, 108.0mm.

 

Obverse:  Stalingrad, by many authorities called the most decisive battle of the entire World War II, resulted in German troops becoming virtually surrounded by Russian troops by the end of November 1942.

 

Reverse:  Until the battles end, on January 31, 1943, the German airforce, mainly with airplanes of the type tri-motor Junkers 52, evacuated 47,000 wounded German soldiers.

This Medal was made to commemorate the heroic deeds of the plane crews and ground personnel in and out of the pocket.
