This medal has the largest mintage number of over one million struck pieces. Many collectors continue to mistake this medal for a 5 Mark coin. It originally was a 5 Reichsmark pattern when created but the coin design was not accepted by the Bavarian Mint. Goetz was persuaded to alter the design to convert the initial coin pattern (K-387) into a commemorative medal. It was a success and did him well.
